About Australia
Australia is the smallest continent and the largest island on Earth. On the east coast are stunning stretches of white sandy beaches, grasslands, bush and rainforest. In the centre and the northwest of the country there are large sandy deserts and tablelands, while the south coast's rolling hills and valleys are home to world class wineries.
There are six states and two territories in Australia. The states are governed by a central government body called the Commonwealth which resides in the national capital city of Canberra, located in the Australian Capital Territory. (The two territories are self-governing.)
The overall population is approximately 20 million. The climate varies greatly due to geographical location; the northern areas are tropical with year-round heat in wet and dry seasons while the south has a more seasonal climate with definite spring, summer, autumn and winter months.
Australia has a public health scheme for permanent residents and citizens of Australia. There is also a reciprocal agreement for citizens of the following countries to receive free or low cost health care: Finland, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
